The AAPP Crest

AAPP Crest Symbolism

PrintThe Academy crest is the product of collaboration between the Academy, member physicians, a heraldry expert, and a marketing firm that specializes in private medicine. Every aspect of the crest bears meaning, and together, this collection of symbols attempts to convey the basic vision of private medicine.

The Shield:

The bottom portion of the crest contains a collection of symbols that together represent a medical home. From top to bottom:

The Chevron (upside down V): The Chevron represents the roof of a house and symbolizes the concepts of home, protection, and faithful service.

The Caduceus: The traditional symbol for medicine is the mace of Mercury, with wings attached, and entwined with two snakes. It denotes balance and the union of opposing forces. It is a symbol of peace and healing.

Conjoined Hands: The conjoined hands represent a partnership and bond between the patient and physician.

The Open Book: The open book represents the manifestation of knowledge and a commitment to continuous learning.

The Doctor’s Bag
While not a traditional heraldic symbol, the doctor’s bag was selected to represent the revitalization of an era in medicine characterized by close relationships between physicians and their patients and the delivery of personalized medical service directly to patients, unencumbered by outside influences.

@
Also not a traditional heraldic symbol, the @ symbol was selected to symbolize the private physician’s commitment to timely communication and accessibility and to the safe and appropriate use of current technology in the service and treatment of patients.

Ivy
The ivy that surrounds the shield symbolizes protection and healing and a strong and lasting relationship between patients and their physician.

Time
The shield is encircled by 60 hash marks that are intended to represent time – the vital resource that private medicine recaptures for physicians and that enables the delivery of this special type of medical care for patients.

The Colors:
Blue: The color blue symbolizes truth, integrity, and loyalty.
Burgundy: The color burgundy symbolizes strength and nobility of mind and character.
Silver/White: The colors silver and white symbolize peace and sincerity.

July 2012

In considering alternatives to office-based Family Medicine within a multi-specialty group, I came across the AAPP website and inquired about the one-on-one workshop which was being offered. This is “a phone-based workshop for physicians who are interested in exploring private medicine”.

Tom Blue spent over an hour on the phone with both my husband (a businessman by trade) and me (a physician) answering questions and providing guidance. I was amazed at how much interest Tom took in what we said and how much he had to offer from his prior experiences with establishing concierge practices. The conversation was inspiring and enlightening. I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity.

Thank you, Tom, for your insights and your time!
